Genetically Modified/Engineered Foods

Today in class (yes, bright and early on a Saturday :) ) we watched Harvest of Fear, a documentary on GM foods in preparation for our papers due next week. It was sooo interesting. I loved it! I love anything by PBS, including Dr. Amen, but anywho…. back to GM: I think to the general public, this should be an issue they should be concerned with. Before watching this, I was resistant to the thought of “frankenfoods.” But after watching, well, I’ll let you see for yourself. They have a great website, but I highly recommend seeing the movie. Afterall, as of 2003, 70-75% of the processed foods you bought had some form of GM plant in it. Don’t you want to know more? I sure did! Here’s the PBS link:

Freebies…

So today is tax day, so we deserve some freebies, right? But all the ones being offered are food and threaten my hips and already bulging ass. (That’s another story for another time.) Anywho, the Starbucks one is fabulous for a full-time student like myself. If I had the time I’d go on a Starbucks “tour” with my tumbler and have 6 reports done by the end of the day.

But my absolute favorite one is the offer from Energy Kitchen. They offer nothing over 500 calories and everything is baked, steamed, or grilled. Fab! This is a great alternative choice for people looking out for their ass…literally. Unfortunately it’s only in NYC and Hoboken. So sad. :( Get in Jersey, EK!!!

Big Chains to Post Calories

Thanks to the new health laws. Link from the NY Times.

Now you’ll get to see all the fun food facts at your favorite chains. Would you think twice about ordering a Big Mac if you knew it had over 500 calories? I think you would.  Less Big Macs purchased=big chains revising menus/meals to get more options. I like.

Get your sun on! Here in the northeast, it’s unseasonable warm and sunshiney (yes, made up word). And a source for vitamin D is the sun. However, we were just talking in class about how a lot of people are deficient in this vitamin. We need it for lots of stuff, including getting other minerals (help in the absorption of calcium, for one). My teacher said 10 minutes in some light sun 2-3 days a week would be ample enough vitamin D storage (although, of course some people may not be able to synthesize vit. D from the sun). I’m probably one of those people that’s deficient. I’m ridiculous with the sun block.  Seriously, remember the sun block after those 10 minutes! (Actually, remember that it takes 20 minutes to activate…. ;)

Peeps r stupid.

They have about 30 grams of sugar for 4 of them, 130 cals, and seriously, those colors don’t exist naturally. I’d rather spend the calories on something else. And look what happens when you leave them alone. Dirty things.

Junk Food Jones Is Wired In Your Brain

Article from npr.com

The giste of the article is that, when you eat junk food, you just want more junk food, according to the lab rats tested. Viscious cycle. No sh*t. So don’t start eating junk food, you rat! (Easier said than done, I know.)

What got me was when they said, “We figured as much last night over a second bowl of ice cream just before bed.” Yeahhhh. That’s another post I’ll share.

F.D.A. Cracks Down on Nestlé and Others Over Health Claims on Labels

Article from the New York Times site.

Love it! I first read about it in WSJ about a month ago but came across it again today. Did you know that even if a product contains .5 grams of sugar, or even worse, trans fat, they can say “0 grams” of respective product? Nuts.

from icecreamsource.com

One of the products they are cracking down on is this one. If you’ll notice on the right, it says 0 grams trans fat. However, the product contains 17 grams saturated fat, 3 short of the days FDA upper limit. Not so “good” huh? (Does taste dreamy though….)

An alternative to those tulips you send your mother every year...

If you’re one of those people who send out flowers this time of year (or any time of year), hell why not consider Edible Arrangements!? It’s a thoughtful sentiment…you can eat! And check out the chocolate covered pineapple bunny. I’d much prefer that over the hollow one with creepy eyes. I’m not big on flowers (they’re nice, they really are), but I can’t eat a rose. It wouldn’t taste nearly as good as some chocolate covered strawberries… or give me nearly as much energy. :)

Map your run, b*tches! If you run/walk and don’t know where the heck to go, this is so fab. A coworker led me to the site. I wish I had it a year ago when we first moved to this area and the weather was actually nice. You sort of have to know your surroundings…you don’t want to be running through the wrong part of town or a highway without a shoulder. Regardless, this site rocks. If you don’t have a track like these kids below, then check it out…

Seasons 52

Seasons 52 is a restaurant that boasts a “fresh, seasonal” menu and has nothing over 475 calories. Umm…I’ll take it! Hmm, wonder about the fat content though. Lucky for me, they have locations in Cherry Hill and a new one coming at the King of Prussia mall. Boyfriend and I will certainly go soon and I will CERTAINLY report back. I so want to do like, 15 of those dessert shooters. :(
